Two of my favorite articles highlighting current research on mindfulness:

20 Scientific Reasons to Start Meditating Today by Dr. Emma Seppala
Mindfulness Meditation Benefits: 20 Reasons Why It's Good For You  from the Huffington Post

Apps I'm loving

Headspace   Simple mindful meditation app.  No spirituality.  No religion.  Just 10 minutes of practice for 10 days.  The first 10 days are FREE.

Insight Timer  Easy to use meditation timer with lots of options.

Yoga Download    20 minute yoga classes.  All levels.  All styles.  Because, let's face it, 20 minutes of yoga in my pjs is really all I can handle these days.
FREE!

Stop, Breathe & Think  A friendly, simple tool to guide people of all ages and backgrounds through meditations for mindfulness and compassion. Particularly appealing to teenagers.

Here are a few of my favorite books (roughly in order of preference)

Sitting Still Like a Frog by Eline Snel -- My current favorite.  Simple.  A book for parents.  A CD for kids.  My daughter loves listening to the CD before bed.  (Forward by Jon Kabat-Zinn)

Calm and Compassionate Children by Susan Usha Dermond -- Great ideas for ways to integrate mindfulness into your daily family routines.  And have more fun together.

Everyday Blessings by Myla and Jon Kabat-Zinn (Daughter of Howard Zinn and the founder of MBSR)  -- About the view of parenting.  The chapter on sovereignty presents one of the most sane views of parenting I've come across.

Unconditional Parenting by Alfie Kohn -- Making an argument for discipline that is holistic and with a longer view.  What do you as a parent want to model for your children?  Not a fan of behaviorist parenting strategies.

The Discipline Book by Sears and Sears -- Discipline according to the attachment parenting gurus.

The Emotional Life of Your Brain by Richard Davidson, Ph.D. -- Some of the most current research on the neurobiology of emotions and personality.  Fascinating.

How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk  by Faber and Mazlish -- A classic.  This book changed the way I think about discipline.

Brain Rules and Brain Rules for Baby by John Medina -- A developmental molecular biologist talks about neuroscience and parenting.  Fight fair with your partner and develop self-control.

NurtureShock by Po Bronson -- Interesting read, same guy who wrote the article How Not to Talk to Your Kids (based on research by Carol Dweck) also talks about the importance of self-control.

The Mindful Child by Susan Kaiser Greenland  -- Basic mindfulness practices to help your kids improve the A.B.Cs:  attention, balance and compassion.

Planting Seeds by Thich Nhat Hanh -- A true master on mindfulness with children.

Online Resources

Safely Ever After And a great online resource for talking with your kids about "tricky people" aka strangers.
